O óleo de coco é um óleo vegetal comestível feito a partir do albúmen fresco de coco maduro. Em 2020, o óleo de coco era o óleo vegetal 8ᵉ mais produzido no mundo.

A popularidade do óleo de coco provém dos seus benefícios para a saúde, pois ajuda a reduzir o nível de colesterol "mau" no organismo. Tem muitos usos diferentes na cozinha (óleo vegetal, suplemento dietético), cosméticos (cuidado da pele, cuidado do cabelo) ou na indústria farmacêutica.

Existem dois tipos de óleos vegetais: óleos virgens e óleos refinados (copra). A diferença está na forma como são extraídos. Existem também óleos de coco virgem e extra-virgem, sendo este último mais caro. No entanto, não existe um padrão claro que defina a diferença entre os dois.

Óleo de coco orgânico refere-se ao óleo que foi produzido sem o uso de químicos ou pesticidas para o cultivo dos cocos.

Os cocos são produzidos principalmente na Ásia Oriental, como a Indonésia, e os países europeus são os principais consumidores de óleo de coco, 5 dos países que mais importam óleo de coco estão na Europa em 2020, com a França na posição 9ᵉ de importadores.

Os coqueiros não podem crescer na França continental por razões climáticas, por isso a produção francesa vem do DOM TOM, nomeadamente Reunião, Martinica e Guiana Francesa, mas esta produção permanece baixa, obrigando a França a importar óleos em grandes quantidades. Em 2019 e 2020, a quantidade de petróleo importado estabilizou após um crescimento de 38% em relação a 2018, com mais da metade das importações provenientes das Filipinas em 2020

Os benefícios do óleo de coco para a saúde têm sido controversos, assim como o impacto ambiental da sua produção, mas o óleo de coco orgânico continua a ser um produto que se enquadra perfeitamente nas tendências actuais dos produtos orgânicos e naturais.
