Summary
The global coconut oil market has demonstrated considerable growth, with coconut oil being the 8ᵉ most produced vegetable oil in the world as of 2020. Despite controversies surrounding its health benefits and environmental impact, the demand for coconut oil remains strong, driven by its versatility in applications ranging from cooking and cosmetics to pharmaceuticals. While Europe is one of the leading consumers, the majority of production occurs in Asia-Pacific countries, with Indonesia, the Philippines, and India dominating both production and export markets. In 2020, the Philippines was the primary exporter to France, accounting for 55% of imports.
The market for organic coconut oil is notably significant, representing 70% of the total coconut oil market, aligning with the trend towards organic and natural products. However, the French domestic market depends heavily on imports to meet demand due to climatic constraints on local production within its overseas departments. The unstable prices of coconut oil experienced a substantial decrease, but began to recover post-2019. Despite the lack of a specific regulatory framework within the European Union, the quality of imported batches is monitored.
Growing Consumer Interest in Healthier Oils
The demand for coconut oil in the concerned country has been witnessing an upward trend, fueled by the increasing health consciousness among consumers. Recognized for its potential health benefits, such as contributing to lower levels of bad cholesterol, coconut oil has been gaining popularity not only as a cooking ingredient but also as a component in dietary supplements, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. The use of coconut oil spans various applications, with cooking, beauty, hygiene products, and food and beverages being the primary sectors.
Over recent years, the market has experienced a significant surge in demand, particularly for virgin and organic coconut oils. Virgin coconut oils, including those labeled as "extra virgin," though lacking a standardized differentiation, are preferred for their natural extraction methods and preservation of intrinsic health benefits. Despite being relatively more expensive with prices averaging around 13 to 24 euros per liter, these virgin oils are sought after for their quality and natural properties.
Organic coconut oils, free from chemical pesticides, are part of a wider trend towards organic and natural products. Their market share is substantial, with organic coconut oil accounting for approximately 70% of the market according to some sources. With heightened environmental awareness, consumers are not only interested in the health benefits but also the eco-friendliness of the products they purchase. The growing demand for coconut oil, particularly in its organic form, reflects a broader pattern of consumers opting for healthier choices and aligning their purchase habits with lifestyle aspirations and ethical considerations.
This shift has led to an estimated market size of between 25 and 35 million euros, indicating substantial consumer interest and the promising potential for market growth in this segment.
Key Players in the Global Coconut Oil Market Landscape
The coconut oil industry reaches across various sectors, including culinary, cosmetics, and health supplements, with the market presence of several significant players that cater to the diverse demands of consumers worldwide.
Asian Dominance in Production
At the forefront of production, Indonesia and the Philippines stand out as the juggernauts of coconut oil production. These two countries not only have the most substantial output numbers but are also among the top exporters. Their dominant position is a reflection of the suitability of the Asia-Pacific region's climate for coconut cultivation and the established infrastructure for coconut oil extraction and processing.
European Import Powerhouses
Europe plays a pivotal role as a consuming region, with countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy being among the leading importers of coconut oil. Their high import volumes are indicative of the substantial market demand within Europe, driven by the popularity of coconut oil in food, cosmetics, and health products.
Organic Market Leaders
Organic coconut oil production is another sphere where specific countries are making a mark. The Philippines is a notable leader in this segment, dedicating vast expanses of land to organic coconut cultivation. This is followed by countries such as Indonesia, which is also investing in organic production to meet the increasing global demand for more sustainable and chemical-free products.
Cosmetics and Wellness Brands
In the cosmetics and wellness industry, globally recognized brands like **Emile Noël** and **Aroma-Zone** have incorporated organic virgin coconut oil into their product lines. These companies have responded to the rising consumer interest in natural cosmetics and are known for their quality organic products that offer the benefits of coconut oil to skin and hair care enthusiasts.
The Retail and E-commerce Spectrum
The reach of coconut oil extends to generalized retailers and specialized outlets. Brands like Bio Village and Planet au Naturel have found their place on the shelves of supermarkets as well as online shopping platforms, such as Amazon, catering to consumers who value the convenience of purchasing alongside their regular groceries.
Pricing and Market Competition
On the pricing front, brands like NaturaleBio and La Tourangelle offer a range of coconut oil products, competing on price points that reflect the quality, purity, and sourcing method of coconut oil – whether it be virgin, extra virgin, or refined.
Adjusting to Price Fluctuations
All players in the market are subject to the fluctuations of coconut oil prices, which are influenced by factors such as weather conditions impacting production and changing consumer perceptions.

1 Market overview
1.1 Definition and scope of the study
Coconut oil is an edible vegetable oil made from the fresh albumen of mature coconuts. In 2020, coconut oil was the 8ᵉ most produced vegetable oil in the world.
The popularity of coconut oil comes from its virtues for the health because it contributes to reduce the level of "bad" cholesterol in the body. It has a multitude of different uses in cooking (vegetable oil, dietary supplement), cosmetics (skin care, hair care) or in the pharmaceutical industry.
There are two kinds of vegetable oils: virgin oils and refined oils (copra). The difference lies in the way they are extracted. There are also virgin and extra virgin coconut oils, the latter being more expensive. Nevertheless, no standard clearly defines the difference between the two.
Organic coconut oil refers to oil that has been produced without the use of chemicals or pesticides to grow the coconuts.
Coconuts are mainly produced in East Asia, such as Indonesia, and European countries are the main consumers of coconut oil, 5 of the countries importing the most coconut oil are in Europe in 2020, with France in the 9ᵉ position of importers.
Coconut trees cannot grow in mainland France for climatic reasons, so French production comes from the production of the DOM TOM, notably Reunion, Martinique and French Guiana, but this production remains low, forcing France to import oils in large quantities. In 2019 and 2020 the quantity of imported oil stabilized after a 38% growth compared to 2018, with more than half of the imports coming from the Philippines in 2020
The health benefits of coconut oil have been controversial, as well as the impact of its production on the environment, but organic coconut oil remains a product that fits perfectly with current trends in organic and natural products.
