1.1 Definition and presentation

The market for website development includes services for the creation and improvement of websites. This includes a variety of professions, from web development itself to graphic identity design, improving the user experience in general, or database security. In 2017, the number of websites in the world exceeded 1.4 billion, while the number of e-commerce sites in Europe reached 645,000 according to the Federation of Electronic Commerce and Distance Selling (FEVAD). In Italy the market has considerable potential, as many businesses still do not have a developed website. Currently, in Italy, there are two main types of service providers active in the website development market:

  • Website hosts, which offer various options ranging from sharing to so-called "turnkey" hosting, which allows a company to maintain control over the content of its website;
  • Web agencies, which are part of a communication group or are independent. They target customers in all sectors and offer a variety of services tailored to the size and needs of companies. They rely primarily on their expertise in terms of digital communication and marketing.

However, the market for website creation is under threat. In particular, we note that the technological expertise associated with website creation has become more democratic, even more common.

Faced with these changes, service providers need to develop their expertise in marketing strategy and digital communication. They must also adapt their content to the advent of mobile phones as a web browsing tool.
