Un veicolo usato si dice usato quando è stato in uso per più di 6 mesi (dalla data di prima immatricolazione) e ha percorso più di 6.000 km. La Francia sta vivendo un incredibile dinamismo nel mercato delle auto usate: il volume delle vendite di veicoli usati è da 2 a 3 volte superiore a quello delle vendite di veicoli nuovi.
Il mercato delle auto usate è stato ovviamente perturbato dall'avvento della tecnologia Internet. Questo mercato conta attualmente una ventina di operatori fisici e digitali e quasi la metà degli acquirenti di veicoli usati ha già effettuato le proprie ricerche su Internet. Tuttavia, nessun acquisto di auto viene effettuato esclusivamente sul web, ad eccezione delle piattaforme per il collegamento di persone come Le Bon Coin. Sono stati individuati una ventina di siti, tra cui La Centrale, ma il modello a pagamento del sito è in concorrenza con Le Bon Coin, leader nelle vendite di seconda mano in Francia, i cui costi sono inferiori. Questi siti concentrano le opportunità offerte in vendita da privati, ma molti professionisti sono presenti anche in queste nicchie.

Il mercato dei veicoli usati ha una particolarità in quanto copre solo la rivendita di veicoli tra privati o tramite rivenditori professionali. È quindi necessario prendere precauzioni riguardo alle condizioni del veicolo (condizione meccanica) ma anche alla sua origine (manomissione, moto rubata) per non essere vittima di frode. Questo è il motivo per cui molte persone si rivolgono gradualmente a rivenditori professionali per una maggiore sicurezza.
