Se dice que un vehículo usado se utiliza cuando ha estado en uso durante más de 6 meses (desde la fecha de la primera matriculación) y ha recorrido más de 6.000 km. Francia experimenta un dinamismo increíble en el mercado del automóvil de ocasión: el volumen de ventas de vehículos de ocasión es de 2 a 3 veces superior al de los vehículos nuevos.
El mercado de automóviles de segunda mano se ha visto perturbado, por supuesto, por la llegada de la tecnología de Internet. Este mercado cuenta actualmente con una veintena de reproductores físicos y digitales y casi la mitad de los compradores de vehículos usados han realizado sus investigaciones en Internet de antemano. Sin embargo, no se realiza ninguna compra de coches únicamente en la web, excepto a través de plataformas para conectar a personas como Le Bon Coin. Por lo tanto, es necesario tomar precauciones en cuanto al estado del vehículo (estado mecánico), pero también en cuanto a su origen (manipulación, robo de la motocicleta) para no ser víctima de un fraude. Esta es la razón por la que mucha gente está recurriendo gradualmente a revendedores profesionales para obtener más seguridad.
