Summary of our market study

In 2021, the French agricultural equipment market reached €7.6 billion.

A flourishing sector against a backdrop of growing food needs and technological progress

France's agricultural equipment market is booming, capitalizing on the country's historic position as Europe's agricultural leader. France is Europe's third-largest producer of agricultural equipment and the world's fifth-largest exporter.

There will be between 350,000 and 400,000 farms in France, the number of which has decreased but the size of which has increased, with an average of around 69 hectares per farm. These farms, which include livestock and horticultural activities, are the main consumer base for agricultural equipment.

The production value of French agriculture will exceed 75 billion euros in 2021. Crop production accounts for over 60% of total output.

Demand for agricultural equipment is high. Tractors, harvesters and tillage implements together account for 60% of agricultural equipment sales.

Many innovative solutions are being adopted to support farming operations, including drones, self-driving tractors and technologically advanced harvesting machinery.

France exports two-thirds of its production.

Summary and extracts

1 Market summary

1.1 Introduction and definition

Agricultural machinery and equipment emerged gradually at the end of the 19th century , following the agricultural revolution in France (replacement of animal traction by motorized traction to modernize French agriculture). The term is used to describe all the machines and equipment used in agriculture (tractors, combines, etc.) to increase agricultural productivity. Agricultural machinery can be used for a variety of purposes, such as :

  • Tractors
  • Soil cultivation
  • Planting
  • Harvesting
  • livestock rearing

The global market is expanding rapidly, driven by growing food demand due to a rising population and shrinking arable land, forcing farmers to increase productivity.

France is a world leader in agricultural equipment : it is Europe's 3rd largest producer. After a contraction in activity in 2020, agri-equipment production will reach record levels in 2021, with a market worth 5.5 billion euros, according to AXEMA.
