Protein crops are annual plants, i.e. plants whose life cycle, from germination to seed production, lasts only one year. They belong to the botanical group of legumes and are rich in protein thanks to the presence of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. In France, peas, faba beans and lupinsare mainly produced. Protein seeds produced in France are largely intended for export, however, on the domestic market, uses for animal feed and human consumption are the main outlets. France is one of the main European producers of protein crops: it is notably the leading European producer of peas and field beans. In the EU, production is expected to increase by more than 10% during the period 2022-2023, mainly due to the increase in field peas, and then reach more than 5 million tons of protein crops. This increase in production comes in a global context of rising grain and other commodity prices after the Covid-2019 health crisis and the war in Ukraine. As for the demand for protein crops, it is not weakening, especially since they are a good alternative to soybeans used for animal feed.
