1.1 Definition and scope of the study

A motorcycle is a two-wheeled vehicle with an engine. The motorcycle differs from other two-wheeled motor vehicles by having large diameter wheels (usually 16, 17, or 18 inches). In addition, the fuel tank is located between the seat and the steering assembly, requiring the rider to straddle the vehicle.

Consumers may buy a motorcycle out of need, but most of the time, the reason a person owns a motorcycle is because of a passion for the vehicle.

In 2020, in the top 5 European markets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK), a total of 923,002 motorcycles were sold. This represents a marginal increase of 1.1% over the 2019 figures.

In 2020, the largest motorcycle markets in Europe were Germany (220,304 units), Italy (218,027 units), and France (191,231 units). In this context, the Italian manufacturer Piaggio has a high European market share of 14.2% and ranks first in the German market.

In Italy, in order to drive a motorcycle, you need to have an A license, which allows you to drive without any limitation of engine size and power. In 2019, in Italy, there were 6,896,048 motorcycles, with an increase of 1.7% compared to the previous year.


The electric market should not be underestimated, it is predicted that by 2030, motorcycles will move towards electric, with a gradual (and slow) decline for 'traditional' motorcycles
