1.1 Definition and scope of study
The thrift stores are the shops that sell second-hand clothes, accessories and everything related to the apparel market. There are two types of second-hand stores:
- The thrift stores run by charities, where clothing is donated by individuals
- Stores operating on the deposit-sale principle, where private individuals sell their clothes to the thrift store that is acting as a commercial intermediary
Thrift shops are interesting on different levels : people can find clothes at a low price, with a vintage style and sellers can give a second life to old clothes.
In the whole world, people are always more and more interested on the thrift market, especially in the USA where this is a habit that's been around for a long time.
In Italy, the purchase of second-hand clothes in these stores is becoming more and more popular and chic. Sales are mainly driven by young people and benefit from an increasingly marked ecological awareness.
In 2019 in Italy, the value generated by the second-hand economy has reached 24 billion euros, equal to 1.3% of the national GDP.
Physical stores are raising awareness and increasing their popularity, they are frequented not only by Gen Z, but also by Baby Boomers. Nevertheless, internet is playing a key role. It is evident the success of the second-hand and resale clothing platforms such as Vinted and Depop.

I found this study to be very complete yet concise. It gives the main trends of the market and does not limit itself to "basic" figures such as sales figures, but also deals with pricing strategies and trends according to the positioning of the players.
