La consommation de poisson connaît une forte augmentation au niveau mondial, avec une production accrue d'une part, mais aussi grâce à d'autres facteurs tels que l'amélioration des circuits de distribution.

La demande de poisson au Brésil a augmenté au cours des dix dernières années et, par conséquent, la production augmente principalement avec des espèces qui sont communes au Brésil, telles que le tilapia et le poisson d'Amazonie. Cependant, la consommation reste bien inférieure à la moyenne mondiale de 20 kg par habitant et par an. Outre les raisons culturelles, les Brésiliens n'ont pas l'habitude de manger du poisson et des fruits de mer chaque semaine, il y a le facteur prix car le poisson reste plus cher que la viande au Brésil. Selon la localité, la consommation de poisson par habitant peut atteindre 4 kg par an, comme c'est le cas dans le Rio Grande do Sul.
