Summary

The French discotheque market, significantly impacted by the Covid-19 health crisis, experienced a closure period of 16 months until July 2021, precipitating a decline in the number of establishments, with a steep reduction of nightclubs since the 1980s. The reopening faced challenges due to strict health protocols and a shift in consumer behavior, favoring private events and alternative musical trends. The market before the pandemic consisted of 1,648 nightclubs, which offered a range of services including music, dance, and beverage sales, with large nightclubs predominating in urban areas.

The market showed promising signs post-pandemic, with the emergence of a younger clientele and an increase in customer spending compared to pre-Covid levels. Despite this, fears of virus transmission persisted, affecting customer turnout. The global bar and nightclub market was expected to grow at an average annual rate of 4.28% until 2026 with Europe contributing to 40% of this growth, driven mainly by an increase in high-end alcoholic beverage sales. However, this growth was largely due to bars, not nightclubs. The French nightclub scene is adapting by downsizing and focusing on urban spaces and is attempting to reinvent itself post-pandemic.

Shifting Trends and Resilience in the French Discotheque Market Amidst Health Crisis Challenges

The French discotheque market, once thriving with a vibrant nightlife, has faced significant challenges over the recent years. In the era preceding the COVID-19 pandemic, nightclubs were already witnessing a steep decline in numbers, dropping by around 70% since the 1980s. The market, however, saw a division in the scale of operations ranging from large-scale clubs with over a thousand patrons to smaller venues catering to niche audiences. Prior to the pandemic, the French nightclub industry was categorized under two different national activity classifications (NAF) based on the prevalence of drinking services offered.

The sale figures of drinking establishments, which are notably three times higher than their counterparts, had been observing consistent growth, reaching an impressive 7.2 billion euros in 2021 in comparison to 2.1 billion euros for other leisure activities. Both sectors, however, underwent a sharp decline in 2020 due to the pandemic, with only a marginal recovery in 2021, that did not reach the pre-pandemic levels. Upon the eventual reopening, a quarter of the establishments struggled to resume operations, highlighting the severe impact of the crisis. A study by the Pasteur Institute also tagged discotheques as high-risk venues for COVID-19 transmission, especially among the under-40 demographic, showing an excess risk of contamination by 790%.

Despite these setbacks, the demand for clubbing experiences has been resilient. The post-lockdown period witnessed an emergence of a younger clientele and higher customer spending as observed during the summers of 2021 and post-reopening in February 2022. However, the potential fear of virus contamination persisted as a looming threat over the sector. Almost 10% of clubs entered receivership, and about a quarter faced difficulties that thwarted their re-launch. The closure of these venues affected approximately 30,000 employees, reflecting the scale and dire condition of the industry. Competition from private parties and unauthorized events like 'free parties' also contributed to the sector's struggles, diverting potential clients.

Summary and extracts

1 Market overview

1.1 Definition and scope of study

In France, a discotheque is defined as a drinking establishment whose main activity is the operation of a dance floor. More commonly, the term is used to designate a private music and dance venue, generally open at night and reserved for people of legal age.

There are three different types of discotheque. Large nightclubs are characterized by a capacity of over a thousand people, and are the least numerous. Medium-sized nightclubs (200 to 1,000 places) are more common and can offer different music, rooms and atmospheres to diversify their clientele. Smaller nightclubs prefer to target their clientele more precisely, in particular by offering a niche musical style.

In addition to the difficulties caused by the health crisis, the French nightclub market is also experiencing other difficulties. Before the start of the Covid-19 crisis, the number of nightclubs in France had already fallen by 70% since the 1980s.

While discotheques in major conurbations or student cities such as Paris, Lyon, Rennes or Toulouse were not yet experiencing health problems, the situation for the rest of the country's discotheques would be much worse.while nightclubs in major cities and student towns such as Paris, Lyon, Rennes and Toulouse were not yet experiencing health problems, the situation for nightclubs in rural areas was already critical before 2020, with the last establishments closing in some departments, such as Cantal.

Some owners were already noting a change in customer habits, as they were more attracted to events, which led some nightclubs to transform into concert halls to satisfy the new demand.

In France, the Covid-19 crisis was accompanied by a 15-month closure of nightclubs, with a low rate of opening in July 2021, due in particular to a health protocol deemed too strict by many players.

The extensive closure has also prompted many players in the sector to change career paths, ultimately resulting in a shortage of staff.
