O futsal é um desporto derivado do futebol que é tradicionalmente praticado num pequeno campo coberto entre duas equipas de cinco jogadores. Para este estudo, vamos considerar não a disciplina do futsal, mas a atividade de administrar um centro de futsal. O futsal foi criado no Uruguai depois da Copa do Mundo de 1930 e é um fenômeno recente na Europa. Originalmente, o futsal era chamado de foot-bola-sala ou futebol de salão, literalmente futebol caseiro, e vem da contração entre a palavra espanhola ou portuguesa para "futebol" e o termo francês ou espanhol para "indoor". A sua introdução no continente europeu foi tardia: estima-se, por exemplo, que a sua chegada a Itália tenha ocorrido nos anos 80
O futebol de cinco jogadores na Itália cresceu exponencialmente entre 2008 e 2016, quase dobrando o número de membros.
