El futsal es un deporte derivado del fútbol que se juega tradicionalmente en un pequeño campo cubierto entre dos equipos de cinco jugadores. Para este estudio, consideraremos no la disciplina de futsal, sino la actividad de dirigir un centro de futsal. El futsal fue creado en Uruguay después de la Copa del Mundo de la década de 1930 y es un fenómeno reciente en Europa. Originalmente, el futsal se llamaba foot-bola-sala o futebol de salão, literalmente fútbol en casa, y proviene de la contracción entre la palabra española o portuguesa para "fútbol" y el término francés o español para "indoor". Su introducción en el continente europeo fue tardía: se estima, por ejemplo, que su llegada a Italia tuvo lugar en los años ochenta
El fútbol de cinco jugadores en Italia creció exponencialmente entre 2008 y 2016, casi duplicando el número de sus miembros.
