Castorama was created in 1969 with the opening of its first 5,000 m2 warehouse store in Englos, near Lille, under the name "Central Castor", bringing together hardware, electrical, wood, hardware, wallpaper and materials departments. This was the first large DIY store in France.

The company has belonged to the Kingfisher group since 2001 and is now present in France, Poland and Russia, making it the number 2 DIY retailer in France behind Leroy-Merlin. Castorama also offers a wide range of services, such as home delivery and in-store stock availability.

The company also has a strong presence in the paint market, offering a wide range of paints, in terms of color and composition, for all types of use and at very affordable prices. The Kingfisher group's strategy of massive profitability over quality could, however, damage Castorama's reputation.

Castorama revises its formula in France to boost sales 28/03/2024

The health crisis had kept the French at home, and led to furniture purchases and building work.

For the first half of its financial year ending July 31, 2023, Kingfisher has announced a 3.8% drop in sales for Castorama, and even more for sister chain Brico Dépôt.

The Fédération des magasins de bricolage, the French federation of DIY stores, reported a small gain of 1.3% in value, a mini-progression which, with inflation, conceals a 3.5% year-on-year drop in volumes.
