MARKET OVERVIEW

1.1 Definition and scope of study

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world, not least because of its durability, efficiency and creative possibilities. Concrete is used in the construction of engineering structures, infrastructure and, more generally, in the construction of residential and non-residential buildings.

Ready-mixed concrete (GHP) is a derivative of concrete, which is made of sand, gravel, cement, water and additives. GHP is prepared in plants and then transported to construction sites, where it must be used within 2 hours of its manufacture. For this reason, it is usually produced in plants that are less than 20 km from the place of delivery.

Globally, the value of the ready-mixed concrete market and its demand are considered to be growing. The value is estimated to reach USD 1,206.1 billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 7.9%.

In Italy, the concrete market is also recovering after a period of slight decline in demand and production. Together with Germany and France, Italy is considered one of the main markets for concrete in Europe.

One trend that has increased the demand for ready-mixed concrete is the rise in green building construction.

One problem with concrete is that it can deteriorate over time. In order to deal with this problem, innovative solutions have been developed in recent years, such as the creation of a self-repairing, highly durable concrete, which is therefore more resistant than products already on the market. What makes concrete more resistant is the use of durable cementitious materials that react better to atmospheric agents and require less ordinary and extraordinary repair work.

The Milan Polytechnic has recently created a project called Horizon2020 ReSHEALience, which aims to create more durable ad hoc materials for concrete production.

The above data shows that the market is in a growth phase that follows a phase of slight decline, so in order to penetrate it it is necessary to find innovative solutions to the major problems, such as the durability of materials.
