1.1 INTRODUCTION

A turbine is a hydraulic turbine (underwater or afloat) that produces electricity using the kinetic energy of marine or river currents, in the same way that a wind turbine benefits from the kinetic energy of the wind. The hydro turbine market concerns all companies involved in the design, manufacture and marketing of these alternative energy sources which are destined to play an increasingly important role in the total production of energy in France in the coming years.

In the hydro turbine market, France is presenting the the second largest potential in Europe in the field of hydroelectric energy, after the United Kingdom. France has two marine energy production sites . Other" energies, including marine energies, currently provide 5% of electricity production in France and marine energies represent 0.5% of renewable energies produced in France.

The hydro turbine market is shared by some major players: about ten turbine manufacturers in the world (including 3 French groups), whether or not allied to energy companies . For the actors in the sector, the challenge remains to respond competitively to government calls for tenders, by forming consortia and other alliances. For example, while Siemens, Alstom and Naval Energies entered the market in the 2000s, the last two players did not succeed in establishing a long-term presence due to a lack of government support and a clear understanding of the technology

While the development of onshore wind power is hampered by administrative authorities, offshore wind power is taking off with the emergence of a real industrial sector.
