1.1 Definition and scope of study
Corrugated cardboard, or more commonly cardboard, is normally made up of two flat paper surfaces within which there is a layer of corrugated paper. The whole is held together through the use of glues of natural origin. Thanks to its particular composition, cardboard turns out to be particularly light and resistant and it is for this reason that it is mainly used as a material for packaging.
In addition to being considered as one of the most economical packaging methods, given its high biodegradability, corrugated cardboard is also characterized by high sustainability and is often used as a classic example of circular economy implementation. The eco-friendly nature of this material is expected to strongly benefit its growth, making it favored over other packaging materials.
In Italy, after a period of decline coinciding with the economic crisis of 2010, the corrugated cardboard market has recorded excellent growth in recent years. Of particular importance in this regard are the excellent data characterizing the food sector, one of the most important customers for corrugated board producers. Other important markets for corrugated cardboard producers are the household appliances, furniture, engineering industry, etc.
Despite the fact that the primacy in the production of corrugated cardboard, with regard to the European panorama, belongs to Germany, Italy is in an excellent position together with France and Great Britain.
As far as the national distribution of corrugated cardboard is concerned, not all regions show constant growth and production levels: most of the companies operating in the field of cardboard production are, in fact, concentrated in Lombardy and Emilia Romagna, while Tuscany is the only region to register negative data in terms of growth.
The growth of the corrugated cardboard market can also be explained in relation to the boom in e-commerce: the greater propensity of the Italian population to purchase products online has represented a strong stimulus for cardboard producers, making it necessary to have a greater quantity of the latter for home delivery of packages.
