1.1 Definition and scope of study

The term 'bodywork' refers to the external part of any motor vehicle such as a car, motorbike or lorry. Since the bodywork is built on top of the chassis, it is also called the fairing. The main function of the bodywork is to isolate the outside environment from the inside of the car so that certain parts can be protected from the outside air and temperature. Examples of bodywork are the window, windscreen and rear window. 

As for the global market, it was worth $86.78 billion in the year 2020 and is expected to be worth $109.32 billion by 2026 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.32%. The market during the pandemic period suffered major losses due to declining car sales and forced plant closures.

In Italy, the market for auto body and auto parts has preformed positively since 2014. The average turnover of small and medium-sized Italian companies in 2017 was estimated to be five million euros. On a more specific level, the individual sectors have also shown an upward trend. Between 2014 and 2017, the "Spare parts distributor" sector grew by 30% while the "Spare parts dealer" sector increased by 13%. As for the machine spare parts market in the year 2021, there was a double-digit increase of 42.2% compared to the previous year. According to data released by UNRAE (Unione Nazionale Rappresentati Autoveicoli Esteri), the spare parts most in demand by Italians are those of the Fiat Panda, the market leader with an average of over 138,000 units sold per year. After the Fiat Panda, the best-selling cars with the highest demand for body parts are the Lancia Ypsilon, the Renault Clio and the Citroen C3.
