Summary and extracts

1 Market overview

1.1 Definition

France was the first country to industrialize the use of aluminum in the late 19th century, thanks in particular to French chemist Paul Héroult (1863-1914) and American chemist Charles Martin Hall (1863-1914), in 1886. The following year, the first Société Electrométallurgique Française opened in Froges, followed in 1907 by the Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne plant in Savoie, with tanks powered by 10,000-ampere currents.

Today, the primary aluminum production market is dominated by China, which possesses large reserves of bauxite, the ore used to produce this light metal. In France, the two primary aluminum production sites produce almost 400,000 tonnes of aluminum, i.e. 100,000 tonnes less than the output from the recycling sector. This French industrial sector can benefit from promising customer markets, notably the transport industry (aeronautics, automotive), which favors this metal for its physical properties and low cost.

However, French aluminum forges and foundries suffered several years of decline over the period 2012-2016, despite a rebound in 2017, and a more tenuous one in 2018. The US government's announcements of import taxes on this metal are negative signals for the industry, which remains subject to the volatility of raw material prices.
