1.1 Definition and scope of study
Waste compactors are machines that are used to simplify the dynamics of waste management. There are different machines and these are chosen taking into consideration several factors such as, for example, the type of waste, the size, the space available and the dynamics of the work processes.
The most popular machines are:
- The waste press: which is used to transform waste into bales thus facilitating the storage phase. The advantage of this machine is the fact that it can immediately sort the waste. There are both horizontal presses such as conveyor belts and vertical presses, which are more versatile and adaptable in space.
- The compactor: which is used to compress mixed waste of larger size usually arising from industrial activities or municipal waste.
Usually in large companies that produce a large amount of waste, horizontal balers are used while smaller companies usually have a vertical baler to occupy less space.
Regarding the global waste compactor market, it was valued at USD 466 million in 2019 and is expected to be worth USD 609 million by the year 2025 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.56%.
Regarding the Italian market, special attention is given to plastic compactors. In the year 2021, 27 million euros have been allocated, through the "Mangiaplastica" decree, to contain plastic production using eco-compactors. In this case we are referring to a machine that is used for the separate collection of Pet bottles. Many Italians also use small compactors directly at home in order to reduce the space of waste and be able to manage it in a better way. These types of compactors are easily found in home stores or online.

- Copex is also involved in the agricultural sector, offering solutions for strapping bales of fodder and conditioning household and industrial waste.
- Copex sells around 800 machines a year worldwide.
- Over the past five years, Copex has doubled its sales to over €20 million and employs around 100 people.
- Following the acquisition of Copex, Lefort now has sales of around 110 million euros and 300 employees.
- Copex was founded 75 years ago and was acquired in 1998 by Frédéric Malin, who recently sold the company to Lefort.
