Study Overview
Luggage is any object, often a bag of various sizes, or a suitcase, used to carry personal belongings. A distinction is made between hand luggage, shoulder bags, larger suitcases (wheeled or classic) and backpacks of various sizes. Luggage is used on the move, and its shape and dimensions also depend on the standard sizes allowed in the means of transport: car, plane or boat. On a global scale, the worldwide market is expected to experience strong growth until 2019, driven by growth in the tourism market estimated at around 6% a year, while Asian markets are experiencing double-digit growth rates. The global market is dominated by luggage specialists and a handful of luxury players: Samsonite, LVMH, Delsey, Rimowa, Tumi and VF Corp. But the overall market remains highly fragmented, with a multitude of local brands. In Spain more than anywhere else, the market experienced a sharp decline in 2020 due to the drastic reduction in travel and the halt in international tourist flows. The year 2021 and even more so 2022, however, showed a strong demand for practical, designer and lightweight luggage. Luggage is also becoming more digitalized, as witnessed by the success of Samsonite and its Track & Go system, or Samsonite S'cure. Other companies have also entered the market, such as Amazon with its "Amazon Basics" product. On the other hand, young companies have also successfully entered the market with a "pure-player online" strategy, digital distribution and marketing essentially based on social networks with no physical point of sale.
