1.1 Definition and scope of study
The leather goods market refers to all leather accessories (e.g. bags, belts, wallets). The distinguishing mark of these objects is therefore the material: leather.
Leather goods are therefore evolving in a highly competitive environment where fashion effects are obviously present . It is therefore appropriate for companies present on the market to adapt as closely as possible to demand, especially for new players who need to build up a good brand image. However, the leather industry in general is threatened by the growing environmental and animal awareness of the population, which favours more environmentally friendly substitutes of vegetable or synthetic origin.
According to the Portuguese Association of Shoes, Components, Leather Goods and their Substitutes (APICCAPS), after decades of subcontracting work for international companies, the Portuguese sector is now betting on the development and production of own brands. In this respect, portugal has recently distinguished itself in this high value-added sector which requires skilled labour. Its companies are increasingly exporting the image of the "made in Portugal" label, which is now successful at major international trade fairs such as Mipel . [ Diário de Notícias ]
