Osram is a German manufacturer of incandescent, fluorescent, halogen and LED lamps and bulbs. The group was founded in 1906 in Germany. initially, its sole activity was the production of tungsten filaments for General Electric's light bulbs. The company later began producing its own brand of light bulbs.
Siemens spun off Osram, its former subsidiary. Osram ranks second in the LED lighting market. Osram's positioning is more upmarket.
In a strategic move to transition from bulb manufacturing to LED technology manufacturing, Osram sold its LED bulb manufacturing subsidiary Ledvance in 2017.
Since then, the company's three main segments have been automotive, optoelectronic semiconductors and digital.
There are 46 Osram plants in 17 countries: the main ones are in Germany, France, Latvia, Slovakia, China, Indonesia and Argentina. The French headquarters are in Molsheim, Alsace. In 2017, Osram opened its largest factory in Malaysia.
