LOSC was born in 1944 from the merger of two local clubs, Olympique Lillois and Sporting Club Fivois. In the first decades of its history, the club experienced numerous financial difficulties, was relegated to D2 and lost its professional status in 1969. The club was taken over by Lille City Council in 1980, then privatized in 1999. Since then, the club has competed in Ligue 1, and regularly qualifies for national and European cups.
