French start-up SolReed's recipe for repairing damaged solar panels 21/05/2024
- - Engie Green operates 4.4 GW of renewable energy, including 1.9 GW of photovoltaic power, equivalent to the electricity consumption of over 3 million people.
- - 95% of solar panels are currently recycled, but their premature replacement generates an estimated 6 million tonnes of waste by 2040 on a European scale.
- - Of the 6 million panels operated by Engie Green, 2,000 are replaced every year.
- - In an experiment conducted by SolReed in the summer of 2023, 99% of the 130 defective modules tested were restored to working order.
- - SolReed estimates that extending the lifespan of solar panels by around fifteen years would avoid the production of 1.8 tonnes of CO2 per panel.
- - The unit price of a photovoltaic panel varies from 50 euros to 200 euros.
- - SolReed is aiming for a cost reduction of 30% compared with current alternatives.
- - SolReed plans to employ around ten people by next year.
- - Two pilot maintenance and repair operations are planned by SolReed between now and the end of the year at Engie Green power plants.
