1.1 Definition and scope of study

Marble is a limestone rock in calcite form, whose surface is laminated with cracks that are made of natural minerals and of various colors. The base color of calcite is white, but there is a wide variety of colored marbles due to the different sedimentary structures they can have. Usually, marble is used as a decorative rock, in sculpture or for interior design. The market of marble can be segmented according to color, application, and geographical area. 

The global marble market was valued at $13 billion in 2020, and it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.6% between 2020 and 2025, reaching a value of $16 billion in 2025.

In Italy, that of marble and stone is one of the pillar sectors of the Made in Italy, counting more than 3,200 companies and 33,800 employees. As said before, the quality of Italian marble is well known all around the world: in fact, almost the 75% of the total Italian production is destinated to be exported. Despite the decrease in the number of quarries on the territory, the entire supply chain (including both semi-finished and processed raw materials) is always highly demanded from abroad, especially from Middle East and USA. In particular, processed marble is the one with the greatest impact on the value of exports, and it is primarily requested by USA, Switzerland, Germany, and France.

The main geographical area for the production of marble is the Apuan Versilia district, which accounts for the 36% of sales in absolute value. Therefore, the Apuan sector is confirmed to be the national leader, thanks to its 145 companies, out of which Franchi Umberto Marmi ranks first in terms of turnover and profit. However, even the Veneto district is well-known for the production of marble, and it accounts for the 25% of the Italian production.
