The global spa market is projected to thrive with industry revenues potentially soaring to $77.1 billion by 2022, up from $56.2 billion in 2017, marking an annual growth acceleration to 6.5% from 4.9% between 2015-17. Asia-Pacific led the market in 2020 holding the largest sales share at 28%, attributed to growing disposable incomes and a booming tourism sector in countries like India and China. Europe is anticipated to experience rapid market growth from 2021 to 2028. Key industry players are adapting by offering a range of spa packages, especially premium and luxury options, catering to wealthier demographics. The digitization of spa services is increasing competition and creating new market openings. However, the Italian spa sector, despite foreign investment and infrastructure development hopes, is still recuperating from the pandemic-induced downturn. With a 63% revenue drop in 2020, spa-related revenues partially rebounded to over €600 million in the first nine months of 2022. Italy remains an attractive spa destination with renowned water quality and therapeutic treatments, but the sector is in a recovery phase grappling with high energy costs and a competitive global market..Spa Market Trends and Consumer Dynamics in Italy Italy's spa industry demonstrates notable characteristics with a renaissance in service demand, geographical variety, and an emphasis on wellness and medical tourism. As the classic home of the Etruscan and Roman bathhouses, the modern Italian spa maintains a strong reputation for quality, attracting investments and attention both domestically and internationally. With a defining presence in Italy's self-care sector, spas cater to diverse preferences ranging from the lure of natural mineral springs to medical treatments. Each year, nearly 3 million clients, including a considerable 12% foreign clientele, seek the restorative embrace of Italy's 320-plus accredited spa facilities. In terms of geographical distribution, the northern regions house around 48.7% of spa companies, with Veneto and Campania leading respectively. This geographical spread allows for a range of experiences, whether in art cities or green resorts, while ensuring access to a broad market base from various parts of the country and beyond. Analyzing consumer profiles and behaviors reveals a customer base with individuals predominantly between 35 to 64 years of age. The motivations driving spa attendance have evolved, with relaxation and a desire for aesthetic enhancement taking precedence over purely health-related concerns. Nevertheless, therapeutic benefits remain a significant draw, with many visitors integrating spa visits into their overall health management regimes. The demand indicators suggest fluctuations shaped by the global pandemic, leading to a shift in visitation patterns. While 42% of potential clients hesitated to visit spa and wellness centers during peak COVID times, about 74% expressed an inclination towards spa vacations in the aftermath, highlighting the pent-up need for relaxation and wellness experiences. Moreover, Italy's spa companies experienced a contraction in number and workforce due to economic pressures, yet the trend is towards market concentration with fewer companies managing a higher market share. Despite recent struggles, including a profound revenue dip during the pandemic, the sector's revenues hint at resurgence, with a considerable increase from the last recorded period. Price points in the Italian spa market show a range of options, from daily or hourly access to comprehensive packages that incorporate various treatments and therapies. Offering a mix of affordable leisure and exclusive luxury experiences, businesses are responsive to the diverse fiscal capacities and preferences of their clientele. Regulatory backdrop plays a crucial role in the industry's operation, underlining the importance of scientific validation of spa resources and their integration with health services. Furthermore, initiatives like Italcares aim to augment the medical and wellness tourism market, strategically placing Italy on the global map for health-focused travel. 1 Market Overview

1.1 Definition and presentation

A spa can be defined as an establishment that uses water from mineral springs, as well as mud and the resulting gases, to treat patients' ailments or illnesses. Since prehistoric times, humans have made use of spa waters for their anti-parasitic, therapeutic and hygienic properties, as water was considered the easiest and most natural medicine available. The spa market can be segmented by type of service (hotel/resort spa, salon spa, and medical spa) and by geographic area.

According to the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), total global sales in the industry could jump to $77.1 billion globally in 2022, up from $56.2 billion in 2017, with average annual growth accelerating to 6.5 % in this five-year period from the 4.9 % recorded in 2015-17.

The first spa facilities were introduced to Italy by the Etruscans and Romans, who established spas in places where it was possible to take advantage of natural sources of hot water or with special healing qualities. Over time, especially in the imperial age, spas also spread within cities, thanks to the development of advanced techniques for heating water. Right now the spa industry in Italy is trying to recover from a period of downturn due to the coronavirus pandemic, which had an impressive drop in revenues and an increase in the number of employee layoffs. However, there is still hope for this industry, as many foreign investors are coming to Italy, ready to inject their money into the development of this industry.

In particular, foreign investors are deciding to finance the development of Italian spas as they are known worldwide for their extraordinary quality. With more than 320 spas in operation, 90 % of which are accredited to the National Health Service, Italy has an enormous heritage that combines the healing properties of its waters with the beauty and cultural offerings of the territory. For this reason, thermalism is considered a valuable aid in the prevention and treatment of many chronic diseases and helps to reduce the administration of drugs. In fact, thermal rehabilitation greatly reduces recovery time, even for athletes. The Italian spa system welcomes and cares for nearly 3 million clients a year, 12 % of whom are foreigners.
