The connected household appliance market is undergoing significant growth globally, with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.45% from 2020 to 2024, culminating in a projected market value of USD 159 billion by the end of that period. Driving factors for this market expansion include a growing global population, rising GDP per capita, increased internet access, a surge in smartphone usage, and an expanding working population. Innovations are particularly tailored towards improving user convenience and energy efficiency.

The US and China are leading markets for appliances, with personal care appliances being predominant in the US and cooking appliances in China. Despite the booming growth, connected appliances face challenges such as consumer reluctance to adopt the technology and concerns over data management and reliability in an increasingly digital domestic environment.

The smart home market is also thriving, particularly in the US, with expectations that over 25% of French households will be equipped with smart home devices by end of 2024, showcasing the merging of household appliance and home automation markets.

The Emergence and Growth Trends in the French Connected Household Appliance Market

In recent years, France has witnessed a significant uptrend in the connected household appliance market. This growth is attributed to multiple factors including the "home-made" trend, which has boosted consumer interest in innovative household appliances like the 'Cookéo' by Moulinex and 'Monsieur Cuisine Plus' from Lidl. Despite this appeal, the penetration of connected appliances in the market is still modest, accounting for less than 5% of major household appliances. French consumers have been somewhat hesitant to fully embrace these products, ranking France 16th globally in terms of connected country status according to GfK.

Nevertheless, sales of connected household appliances have surged remarkably, with an increase of 113% in value in 2018, reaching between 190 and 200 million euros. This segment now represents 3% of the total market, with sales rising by 2.1% in value and 2% in volume. The explosion in demand for household appliances, partly fueled by the pandemic, has led to a significant rise of 55% in sales of certain products like coffee machines with grinders. The general market for household appliances grew by 5% in 2020, with small appliances seeing a double increase of 11.2%, amounting to sales volumes of over 55 million devices.

The French market also reveals a high rate of ownership for traditional appliances such as refrigerators (99%), washing machines (97%), and microwaves (92%). The push for innovation is now aimed at driving consumers to opt for the more advanced, connected versions of these ubiquitous devices. Despite the promising numbers, certain challenges remain. Issues of manageability, the complexity of functions, and concerns over data security pose resistance to the adoption of connected devices. Even so, rapid growth is expected with industry players competing energetically through innovation. This includes the likes of large, globally recognized brands such as Samsung and Bosch, and others who continue to focus on enhancing user comfort through multifunctional and smart technologies.

In conclusion, the French market is gradually opening up to the possibilities afforded by connected household appliances.

1 Market overview

1.1. Presentation and definition of the market

The connected household appliance market grew in France in 2018 despite reduced consumption by French households due to limited growth in purchasing power. In fact, it is the household appliance market as a whole that is growing in France, with growth of 1.1% and 0.8% in value respectively according to GfK, for sales of large and small appliances between 2017 and 2018.

During this period, the French confirmed the "home-made" trend, which particularly benefited the connected household appliance market, which was able to respond with numerous innovations. Moulinex was able to offer new food processors such as the "Cookéo", which soon faced competition from Lidl's "Monsieur Cuisine Plus" model.

Connected household appliances promise consumers time savings and ease of use, which in the past were more of a chore than a pleasant activity. The sector is thus strongly driven by the innovation of historical brands of household appliances, such as the iQ500 from Siemens, a connected refrigerator. Connected appliances would also allow for greater energy efficiency.

However, these products are still struggling to fully convince French consumers. They represent less than 5% of the major household appliances available on the market. France also has 6 ème The world economy would only rank 16th in the world ème position among connected countries according to GfK, reflecting the delay of French consumers to adopt and consume connected products.

Most of the growth in the connected appliance market has been captured and sustained by specialist retailers such as Darty, but also by pure-players in the e-commerce world such as Amazon. In order to differentiate themselves from these pure-players, consumer appliance brands have sought to renew the customer experience through their points of sale and a more immersive cross-channel strategy, for example by giving customers the opportunity to test new connected appliance products directly.

It is also in the face of competition from pure-players that connected appliance retail chains have made significant mergers, following the example of Fnac and Darty or even after the takeover of the GPdis group at the end of 2017 by MDA Company, which now has the leading network of consumer appliance stores.
