The spring market is first and foremost an industrial subcontracting contract . The springs are not sold as such but are integrated into many industrial devices with very diverse functions
This diversity requires manufacturers to high flexibility in manufacturing springs that must be assembled with other parts and correspond to very specific products.
Spring production is thus linked to other industries that are particularly present in the French economy According to the World Bank the industry represented 19.6% of the country's value added in 2016 (in % of GDP) for France compared to 24.5% for the European Union and 25.8% for Switzerland.
Four sectors in particular require the use of springs in their production:
- Capital goods for households;
- The Machinery, Electronic Equipment and Metals (MEM) industry;
- Automobile manufacturing;
- The aeronautics and space industry.
It is important to note the importance of these sectors and in particular the automotive industry and the aeronautics and space industry, which are among the most important france's main export branches.
The innovation and quality are essential in the spring market, resistance in particular is essential since subcontractors deal with companies working in high-tech sectors such as aeronautics and automotive. France also has to face up to german competition, leader in the spring sector in Europe, followed by Italy.
This predominance of Germany and Italy is reflected in the ranking of companies operating in France. The two most important companies in terms of turnover are Sogefi Suspensions (belonging to the Italian group Sogefi) and ISRI (belonging to the German group Isringhausen).
According to Xerfi, French spring manufacturers have achieved 257.6 million euros in cumulative revenue in 2016.
In France, the INSEE nomenclature corresponding mainly to the activity is grouped under the nAF code 25.93Z - Manufacture of wire products, chains and springs although other headings may be present. The manufacture of watch springs corresponds to NAF 26.52Z.
