MARKET OVERVIEW

1.1 Definition and scope of study

The shotgun market is a sub-market for guns and particularly rifles. In many countries, hunting is considered as a hobby, in others as a sport; in any case it is an activity regulated by law, otherwise it is considered poaching. The shotgun is a weapon with a long barrel; it consists of a shoulder stock and has a smooth bore. These weapons are also used for sporting purposes to a lesser extent, particularly in skeet shooting. Different types of rifles are available in the market, according to the type of barrel: smooth or rifled, and the mechanism: automatic or non-automatic and the caliber. Because it employs ammunition called cartridges with various metal balls inside to maximize the probability of hitting the target, the shotgun traditionally has a smooth barrel. The market value varies greatly depending on the gun laws in place; in some states in the United States, it is very easy to own a gun, while in European states you must have a national hunting license, which, in addition to having a significant price tag, also requires qualification. The three largest manufacturers of shotguns in the world are: James Purdey & Sons, Holland & Holland and Italy's Beretta.

The global shotgun market (which includes hunting and target rifles) is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.5% from 2020 to 2027, from $1.8 billion in 2020 to $2.1 billion in 2027.

To own a shotgun, you must comply with the relevant law in Italy. First of all, it is necessary to be of legal age and obtain the specific gun license for hunting, called in Italy "porto d'armi per uso venatorio" (gun license for hunting use), which allows to use the gun only during the hunting season and in authorized areas, with necessary renewal every 5 years. Italy is one of the biggest producers of shotguns that exports almost all over the world, being the Italian market very limited by European laws and directives; in the 70's the owners of a shotgun with hunting license were about 2 millions and 300 thousands, against about 700 thousands of the current period. Beretta is one of the biggest companies in the world producing rifles and carbines and the biggest exporter in Europe;

In Italy at this time, by popular initiative, signatures are being collected for a referendum to abolish hunting. The necessary signatures have already been collected to be discussed with the government. In case of abolition of hunting there will surely be a decrease in the demand of hunting rifles but on the other hand an increasing demand of sporting rifles, similar in structure but not in use.
