1.1 Definition and scope of study

A sports equipment can be defined as a piece of equipment used to practice a sport. It can be clothing (shoes, jerseys, etc.), equipment (tennis rackets, footballs, handballs, etc.) or even machines, particularly those used for weight training (rowing machines or treadmills, for example). Talking about the market implies mentioning two aspects, manufacturing and distribution.

We must be careful to distinguish sports articles from sports equipment, the latter being an arrangement or construction allowing the practice of one or more sports.

Nevertheless, sportswear, a type of clothing whose style was designed in the United States, can be considered as sports articles, although it is more a clothing trend than real articles developed for the practice of sports. This study will therefore focus on both sports' equipment and sportswear items.

According to ISTAT, 18 million Italians were training daily. After the pandemic, this number is expected to grow, due to a change in lifestyle and an increased sensitivity to health issues. Between 2020 and 2025, a compound annual growth rate of 4% is estimated. 

The Covid 19 crisis, however, had a strong impact on the sporting goods retail market. The closure of gyms, for example, has led to an increase in the price of home sports equipment. Weights cost 57.5% more, exercise bikes 58.5%. The e-commerce sector was also impacted, with the Sport & Outdoor category growing 96.3% over 2019.
