The market for football clubs mainly covers the players of the Professional Football League (LFP), which brings together the French and Monegasque clubs with professional status, i.e. the 20 Ligue 1 clubs and the 20 Ligue 2 clubs.
The economic sector "professional football" in France generates several billion euros each year with double-digit annual growth since 2016, after many years of deficit. But the MTP accounts for two-thirds of the growth of its peers. In 2016, nearly 3% of the French population is part of a football club and France is one of the main football countries in Europe, with more than 15,000 football clubs and more than 2 million members, 5% of whom are women (a constantly increasing number).
The transfers During the summer and winter dedicated periods, they contribute to the development of football in France with increasingly significant amounts, whether for purchase (Neymar, bought 220 million euros by the PSG) or for sale (Pepe, sold more than 80 million euros by Lille in 2019). For example, in 2016, summer transfers amounted to more than €4.2 billion, driven by British Premier League spending of €1.4 billion. French League 1 generated a profit of €425 million in transfers. Also, the sponsoring and the tV rights are contributing to the growth of the market in France.
The football club market is dominated by the PSG, Olympique Lyonnais and Monaco, as well as a handful of other clubs, leaving little room for the remaining players. The tremendous growth of the PSG and the OL may hide the financial difficulties of the other clubs, which makes it rather difficult to estimate the growth of the other market players in the coming years.
The football club market is facing a resurgence of regulatory constraints (draft tax on high incomes), as well as the financialisation of the football economy marked by the arrival of the investment funds foreigners .
