1.1 INTRODUCTION

L’ escape game is a life-size escape game in which a group of people is locked in a room, the objective being to get out in a limited amount of time via clues to find and riddles to solve. In France, the concept appeared between 2010 and 2013 in major French cities: in 2016, one brand even opened every three days on average to reach more than 642 brands by the end of 2018 in France, of which nearly a third were developed under franchise (for more than 1,500 theatres)

Customers are segmented between private individuals in search of thrills and immersive settings, and the companies who are more interested in team building activities to strengthen team ties. The concept evolves at a phenomenal speed: more immersive sets, a plunge into the cinematographic worlds of science fiction, thriller and even horror or the intervention of real actors during the session in atypical places. This move upmarket has caused the closure the most fragile escape games unable to increase their value proposition in time: in 2018, the first escape games closed, including some Mystery Escape franchises in Paris

The challenge will therefore be to take the innovation wagon to remain on the market and successfully move upmarket: the weight of the franchise is growing exponentially, the large groups with large budgets will therefore have a significant advantage in terms of investment power over small independent escapes games.
