An electric scooter is considered to be a ride accelerator (not a real means of transport) and consists of a platform on which to rest your feet, two wheels with suspension, a T-shaped handlebar with an accelerator and possibly a hand brake.

This market can be segmented according to the type of scooter user, there are:

·      Users who own a scooter;

·      Users who use self-service rental solutions.  

Globally, this market is definitely growing. It is estimated that the sector will grow at a CAGR of 7.6% from 2021 to 2028, reaching a value of $34.7 billion by 2028. 

In Italy, the sale of scooters increased by 90% in 2020, from January to July about 120,000 scooters were sold, mainly in urban areas. It is also estimated that the value of the market grew by 140% year-on-year. 

These data are very promising and allow us to estimate further growth over the next few years. 

It should also be taken into account that sales prices have risen by an average of 65% since last year. One incentive that has enabled many Italians to buy this type of accelerator is the introduction of the 2020 mobility bonus. This bonus makes it possible to receive a contribution of 60% of the total expenditure incurred.  

The trends driving the growth of this sector in Italy are: the need to find a more efficient alternative to public transport, the focus on more sustainable practices, and the increasing traffic restrictions imposed on cars by local authorities to reduce urban pollution.

The main drivers of growth in this sector are disposable income, which changes depending on the city in which one is located, and the presence of young people. These two factors must be taken into account when deciding whether investing in this sector is the right choice in a given city.
