1.1 Definition and scope of study

The paint industry includes several segments: building paints, consumer paints, industrial paints, anti-corrosion paints, marine paints and finally bodywork paints. [FIPEC]

Within the construction sector, the paintwork market covers all types of work done with paint by companies in the construction sector.

In a highly competitive market, paint manufacturers are struggling to develop. The colour paints segment is suffering the most, while white paints are progressing painfully.

However, many customer markets amongst both professional painters and private individuals are growing steadily. In the last few years, the increase in the number of transactions in the market for existing housing was able to support the paint segment in France.

Paint manufacturers regularly innovate in the composition of their paints, and thus imagine new uses for paint in addition of its simple function of coating; today we find on the market fireproof paints, chalk paints or insulating paints.

The sector is finally suffering from growing environmental awareness and must, therefore, develop new products that are more environmentally friendly and free of volatile organic compounds such as lead, which was banned in 2004 in the composition of paints.
