1.1 Definition and scope of the study

Children begin to need shoes when they are about to walk, usually around the first year of life. Children's shoes should be soft and lightweight, yet supportive of the foot. In addition, it is best to avoid cheap, synthetic fabrics that make the foot sweat. It is also best to avoid hypoallergenic and harmful substance-free materials, as children might put them in their mouths. The best material is leather. Today, in Italy, more durable materials are becoming more popular

There are 3 different periods for Italian shoe production:

  • The 1980s: before the harmonization of wages in the European Union, producers mainly produced domestically;
  • At the beginning of the 1990s: producers moved south (Maghreb) or to Eastern European countries;
  • At the end of the 1990s: the race to Asia. China and India became the world's leading shoe manufacturers.

In Italy, 439,747 babies were born in 2018, while 420,084 in 2019. Therefore, in 2019 there was a decrease of 4.7%, with an average of 1.27 children per woman, Italy has one of the lowest fertility rates in Europe. "Made in Italy" remains a globally recognized brand for trust and care for the health of children's feet.
