MARKET SUMMARY

1.1 INTRODUCTION

A battery pack (or accumulator battery) refers to a juxtaposition of interconnected electric accumulators that create a electrical generator of voltage and electrical capacity . The battery market can be segmented in different ways:

  • By type (primary and secondary battery);
  • By technology (lead battery, lithium-ion battery, nickel-metal hydride battery -NiMH-, nickel-cadmium battery - NiCD-, nickel-zinc battery -NiZn-, Flow battery, sodium-sulfur battery -NAS-, zinc dioxide manganese battery, sealed lead acid battery, etc.) ;
  • By application
    • Automotive batteries (HEV, PHEV, EV);
    • Industrial batteries
      • Power units
      • Fixed for telecoms, energy storage systems, photovoltaic and solar panels, etc..;
    • Portable batteries for consumer electronics, etc. ;
    • Other applications

The battery market is dominated by world leaders in electronics and automotive equipment which leaves little room for new entrants. Lithium-ion batteries, the most popular batteries, are used on mobile phones, computers, but also on electric vehicles (bicycles, cars...).

The main drivers that influence the market are lower lithium-ion battery prices, the rapid adoption of electric vehicles, the growth of the renewable energy sector and the increased sale of electronic products to the general public. On the other hand, the inadequacy of the supply and demand for the raw materials needed to manufacture batteries could hinder market growth.

At the global level, the production of 100% electric vehicles was estimated at 0.15 million in 2015, but this figure will explode by 2020 to reach 1.04 million in 2020. The massive adoption of purely electric vehicles (Tesla's S or Nissan's Leaf) could trigger a boom in the lithium market with a 30% increase in lithium consumption in the automotive segment between 2010 and 2020. The bankruptcies of several manufacturers in recent years are symptomatic of a consolidation of the lithium-ion battery market around the strongest players in the industry.
