1.1 INTRODUÇÃO

A alicamento (ou "medicamente" ou "nutracêutico") refere-se a um género alimentício com virtudes farmacêuticas . Pode ser um alimento natural contendo moléculas activas ou alimentos industriais enriquecidos artificialmente. Esta denominação pode afectar o comércio de alicamentos, uma vez que prevê várias questões éticas e comerciais . A segmentação utilizada no mercado é a que distingue alimentos industriais (como alimentos fortificados com Omega-3, alimentos ricos em Bifidus activo, etc.) e medicamentos naturais (como fitoterapia ou fitoterapia).

O mercado dos alicamentos parece estar a abrandar após os anos bastante bem sucedidos dos anos 90 e 2000. Em questão estão os abusos de marketing que promovem os méritos dos produtos com benefícios para a saúde muito acima dos efeitos reais sobre o corpo, levando os consumidores a falar sobre um verdadeiro "golpe". Nos Estados Unidos, Danone foi multado em dezenas de milhões de dólares por uma queixa do consumidor que questionava os benefícios de Actimel .
