Os complementos alimentares são géneros alimentícios que fornecem uma fonte concentrada de nutrientes para complementar a alimentação, comercializados sob a forma de dose. Podem conter vários ingredientes (vitaminas, minerais, plantas e ervas, etc.) e ser comercializados em diferentes formatos (cápsulas, comprimidos, pó, etc.) para responder a uma vasta gama de objectivos: luta contra o stress, fadiga, problemas digestivos, emagrecimento, beleza da pele, beleza do cabelo, desempenho desportivo.

No entanto, situam-se entre a alimentação e a medicina e, embora não possam pretender ter um efeito terapêutico, são recomendados, nomeadamente pelos profissionais de saúde. O mercado mundial deverá registar um crescimento anual de 8,4% entre 2021 e 2030, graças à crescente sensibilização dos cidadãos para a importância da sua saúde e à aceleração do ritmo de vida, que impulsionam a procura de produtos eficazes e vitalizantes. O sector é largamente dominado pelos Estados Unidos.

Em França, o mercado também está a registar um forte crescimento,aumentando 43,8% entre 2013 e 2019. Até 2021 , terá crescido 6% para atingir vendas de 2,3 mil milhões de euros. Do lado da produção, existem muitos intervenientes especializados ou polivalentes, como a Arkopharma e a Juvamine. Do lado da distribuição, as vendas dividem-se entre farmácias, drogarias, supermercados e vendas directas ou em linha.

Tal como a indústria alimentar em geral, os complementos alimentares estão a ser afectados pelas tendências da naturalidade e da personalização, deixando a porta aberta à entrada de novos e pequenos operadores neste mercado em rápida mutação.num mercado em crescimento, os operadores procuram diversificar a sua oferta e captar os segmentos mais promissores.
