Como todos os seres vivos, as plantas têm certas necessidades nutricionais que devem ser satisfeitas a fim de assegurar o seu desenvolvimento adequado. Quatro necessidades distintas foram cientificamente identificadas: potássio (K), nitrogênio (N), oxigênio (O) e fósforo (P). Embora o oxigénio esteja naturalmente presente no ar, é muitas vezes necessário assegurar o fornecimento dos outros três elementos para garantir rendimentos agrícolas regulares e elevados.
Nitrogênio, potássio e fósforo são, portanto, a base para a produção de de fertilizantes químicos que é geralmente referido como "fertilizante NPK" [ O Mundo ]. Estes fertilizantes também são chamados fertilizantes minerais. Existe outra categoria de fertilizantes, a dos fertilizantes naturais ou orgânicos (produzidos a partir de matéria vegetal ou animal).
O uso de fertilizantes responde assim a uma acção de fertilização do solo . O objetivo é aumentar os rendimentos agrícolas para atender a uma demanda global por alimentos que está aumentando ano após ano. O mercado de fertilizantes é, portanto, um mercado em constante crescimento.
