O mercado imobiliário compreende a compra, venda e aluguel, arrendamento de imóveis e condomínios para uso doméstico comercial e pessoal. Um actor significativo no mercado imobiliário é a promoção imobiliária, um processo empresarial que inclui as actividades desde a renovação e arrendamento de edifícios existentes até à compra de terrenos em bruto e a venda de terrenos ou parcelas urbanizados a terceiros.
O mercado de incorporação imobiliária engloba todos os profissionais cuja principal missão é comercializar espaços construídos, convertendo ideias do papel para a realidade. Embora o desenvolvimento imobiliário não seja a mesma coisa que a construção, muitos incorporadores também gerenciam o processo de construção - e até mesmo o processo de venda, como as agências imobiliárias. No entanto, os desenvolvedores geralmente são aqueles que apresentam os maiores riscos na criação ou renovação de um imóvel. Assim, estes tipos de investidores estão sempre à procura das melhores oportunidades de mercado e dos mercados que parecem oferecer um bom equilíbrio entre risco e retorno.
