Do-it-yourself refere-se a actividades manuais não profissionais de reparação, criação, melhoria e manutenção de pequenos objectos em casa. Este estudo concentra-se no mercado de bricolage do consumidor e, portanto, exclui a actividade BtoB das lojas e centros de bricolage.

O mercado de bricolage, portanto, diz respeito a uma grande variedade de itens. A Union Nationale des Industriels du Bricolage (Inoha) identificou 11 categorias principais: construção, canalização/sanitária, jardim, pintura/cola, madeira/madeira, revestimentos, ferramentas, electricidade, ferragens, decoração e conforto térmico.

Estes diversos produtos são produzidos em França ou importados e depois distribuídos por super-lojas de bricolage, retalhistas, pure-players digitais ou super-lojas alimentares. Em França, a distribuição de artigos de bricolage é, no entanto, muito concentrada, uma vez que as lojas de bricolage representam 74% das vendas em valor e apenas 4 grupos representam 93% do volume de negócios das lojas de bricolage, ou seja, dois terços do mercado total. Os principais intervenientes no sector são os 4 grupos Adeo (Leroy Merlin, Weldom, Bricoman), Kingfisher (Castorama, Bricodépot), Mousquetaires (Bricomarché, Bricocash, Bricorama) e Mr Bricolage (Mr Bricolage, Briconautes).

O mercado francês de bricolage é o terceiro maior da Europa, atrás daAlemanha e do Reino Unido. Em escala global, no entanto, os Estados Unidos dominam em grande parte, respondendo por cerca de metade do mercado mundial em valor. Este mercado global totalizou 594 mil milhões de euros em 2018, crescendo de forma constante desde 2013.

O mercado francês de bricolage registou um aumento de 3,4% no volume de negócios em 2019. Este crescimento pode ser explicado, em particular, pela recuperação económica do sector da construção e pelo aumento da tendência de "faça você mesmo".

Em março e abril de 2020, a crise da Covid-19 interrompeu o dinamismo do mercado francês de bricolage, que era de +2,21% em termos de valor em fevereiro de 2020. Após a contenção, porém, houve um efeito de recuperação com uma taxa de crescimento de 30% nas vendas de bricolage em junho de 2020 em comparação com junho de 2019 e, em seguida, o ritmo de crescimento das vendas diminuiu, ilustrando o retorno gradual à normalidade nas vendas de bricolage.
