O mercado de automóveis engloba a fabricação de carros de passeio, veículos comerciais ligeiros, veículos comerciais pesados e autocarros pesados. Podemos categorizar automóveis pelo tipo de consumo de combustível como gasolina, gasóleo, eletricidade, etanol e motor elétrico combinado, e híbridos. Os principais fabricantes de automóveis são a Toyota, General Motors, Volkswagen, Hyundai Motors, Ford, Nissan, Honda, PSA, Suzuki, Renault, Fiat, BMW, Mazda, Mitsubishi.

Motivados por iniciativas globais de conscientização ambiental, players de todo o mundo estão a decretar controlos de emissões mais rigorosos em novos modelos de veículos. Como tal, os fabricantes de automóveis começam a expandir o seu negócio para o sector da mobilidade elétrica, o que, consequentemente, também está a causar uma revolução no setor de peças. Um a cada 3 carros novos vendidos deverá ser impulsionado ou assistido por uma bateria elétrica até 2025. A China deverá liderar o mercado até 2040, com vendas de veículos autónomos previstos em 14,5 milhões de unidades.

No Brasil, o setor representa cerca de 22% do PIB industrial. O mercado interno brasileiro manteve a alta de crescimento em torno de 2,3% da produção de veículos no país em 2019, segundo dados da Anfavea (Associação Nacional dos Fabricantes de Veículos Automotores). Ainda assim, a persistente crise no maior mercado consumidor externo, a Argentina, obteve uma retração de 31,9%. Como resultado final, foram produzidos em torno de 2,9 milhões de veículos no Brasil em 2019. A falta de alternativas de qualidade no que diz respeito a transportes públicos urbanos, ainda é um dos principais impulsionadores deste mercado no país. A expectativa é que o setor interno continue assegurando a produção, com uma crescimento esperado de 9,4% no emplacamento no país.
