Le thé, avec 1,5 milliard de tasses consommées chaque jour, est la deuxième boisson la plus consommée dans le monde après l'eau. Établi en Chine, introduit au Japon à la fin du VIIIe siècle et faisant partie de la culture britannique, le thé occupe également une place particulière dans les cultures du Moyen-Orient. Ce caractère mondial du thé se reflète dans la longue liste des pays où le thé est consommé.
Le thé est une boisson obtenue à partir des feuilles du théier (environ 200 espèces), infusées dans de l'eau chaude. Les types de thés sont segmentés par leurs couleurs (noir, vert, Oolong, jaune, blanc et post-fermenté) qui diffèrent selon le traitement des feuilles récoltées. Le Rooibos ou "thé rouge" est en fait une infusion obtenue à partir des feuilles de l'Aspalathus linearis, que l'on ne trouve qu'en Afrique du Sud, et non à partir du théier.
Les modes de consommation diffèrent d'un pays à l'autre. Au Portugal, le thé est principalement consommé en sachets, et le thé noir est consommé deux fois plus que le thé vert, malgré une croissance plus faible. 58,6 % des habitants du Portugal consomment du thé, la consommation étant fortement segmentée par sexe, le taux de consommation des femmes étant supérieur de 39 % à celui des hommes. En outre, il existe également une importante segmentation par revenus : les classes supérieures et moyennes sont plus enclines à en consommer (respectivement 76,2 % et 70,3 %). Lipton occupe une position de leader remarquable sur le marché portugais, détenant environ la moitié de la part de marché des thés et des infusions.
