1.1 Définition et périmètre d'étude

Le prêt-à-porter désigne l’ensemble des articles vestimentaires produits en série grâce à une standardisation des tailles. Il s’oppose donc au sur-mesure. Sont par ailleurs exclus de cette étude les chaussures et accessoires non textiles, ainsi que les produits destinés aux enfants. 

Le marché mondial du prêt-à-porter féminin est en expansion, notamment en raison du dynamisme des marchés d'Asie-Pacifique et des Etats-Unis qui tirent la croissance. Le marché est par ailleurs caractérisé par une structure atomisée, aucune entreprise ne représentant plus de 3% de parts de marché du secteur. Ainsi, les 5 premières entreprises du marché du prêt-à-porter, à savoir Nike, Adidas, Inditex, H&M et Fast Retailing, représentaient seulement 8% du marché en 2018.

Représentant un quart du marché textile italien, le chiffre d’affaires du secteur de la mode féminine a augmenté de 4.5% entre 2018 et 2019. Le marché italien du prêt-à-porter féminin, et de la mode en général, est cependant très atomisé. Il existe des entreprises de toutes tailles, avec des chiffres d’affaires très différents, des artisans ultra spécialisés aux grands groupes « verticalisés ». En effet, Max Mara, leader du marché, possède 5% des parts de marché en 2020, suivi par Zara Italie avec 3.8% et Calzedonia avec 3.7%. 

Cependant, le marché du prêt-à-porter féminin évolue en fonction de tendances qui constituent d’importants relais de croissance. L’engagement social et environnemental constitue notamment l’enjeu principal de la filière. A cela s’ajoutent la digitalisation du marché et l’influence significative des campagnes de marketing et de communication. Enfin, les exportations sont au beau fixe et le marché international apparait donc comme un débouché prometteur.
