Les équipements de ski sont ceux qui servent à la pratique des sports de glisse à des fins personnelles. Le champ d'application de cette étude comprend donc l'ensemble des équipements de ski au sens large du terme. Le ski de fond, le ski alpin et le snowboard seront pris en compte, seuls les vêtements de ski seront exclus.

L'une des principales tendances à long terme sur ce marché est la part croissante de la location de matériel par rapport à l'achat. Ce dernier est désormais minoritaire parmi les activités des vendeurs de matériel de ski.

Dans un marché fragmenté, les producteurs doivent rivaliser d'ingéniosité pour combiner de nouveaux matériaux et de nouvelles technologies à des prix abordables. Les fabricants de skis "traditionnels" sont progressivement dépassés par les fabricants d'articles de sport généralistes tels que Decathlon ou Go Sport.

Contrairement à l’imaginaire populaire, le Portugal dispose de stations de ski. En fait, l'une des stations les plus célèbres se trouve à Serra da Estrela, dans le district de Guarda, à une altitude maximale de 1993 mètres. Le faible coût du tourisme dans le pays, par rapport aux autres pays européens, montre un avantage comparatif intéressant dans la pratique de ce sport dans le pays. Malgré cela, la vente de matériel sur le territoire portugais est largement dominée par de grands acteurs internationaux qui peuvent offrir des prix plus bas aux consommateurs amateurs et professionnels.
