Le diagnostic in vitro diffère donc du diagnostic in vivo, qui est effectué directement sur des organismes vivants et non sur des échantillons de ceux-ci. Le marché du diagnostic in vitro peut être segmenté en fonction des produits (instruments, réactifs et services), de la technologie (immunodosage, hématologie, chimie clinique, etc.), de l'application (maladies infectieuses, oncologie, cardiologie, etc.), des perspectives d'utilisation finale (hôpitaux, laboratoires, soins à domicile, etc.) et des perspectives régionales.

Le marché mondial du diagnostic in vitro a été évalué à 83,4 milliards USD en 2020, et devrait croître à un taux de croissance annuel moyen de 4,5 % au cours de la période allant de 2021 à 2027.
