1.1 Présentation
Les bioplastiques recouvrent des matières plastiques agrosourcées ou agroplastiques, provenant de ressources renouvelables, comme le maïs, la patate douce, le blé, la canne à sucre ou l’huile de ricin. Le terme "bioplastique" désigne également des plastiques biodégradables, y compris des plastiques issus de réactions pétrochimiques.
Il est possible d’utiliser des bioplastiques à la fois lors de la fabrication :
- d’objets jetables
- d’objets non jetables (exemple : les boîtiers de téléphone portable). En effet, l’utilisation de bioplastiques permet une réduction des rejets de gaz à effet de serre lors du processus de production.
Les applications du bioplastique sont nombreuses. On peut par exemple citer: les emballages alimentaires, les sacs, l'agriculture, les produits à usage unique, les produits d'hygiène et cosmétiques, le secteur automobile.
Les capacités de production de bioplastiques mondiales sont en croissance et devraient continuer à croître dans les années à venir, dont l'emballage est le premier débouché. Le marché des bioplastiques attire de plus en plus les géants agroalimentaires friands des méthodes de production plus respectueuses de l'environnement.
Cependant, la production de bioplastiques doit faire face à deux critiques majeures. D'abord la concurrence avec le secteur alimentaire étant donné l'origine des produits utilisés pour sa production puis les énormes besoins en eau et de terres arables nécessaires.
Le marché du bioplastique belge s'appuie notamment sur une base de consommateurs de plus en plus soucieuse de la question écologique même si le bioplastique souffre encore d'un manque de notoriété. D'où l'importance des labels qui permettent de communiquer et de certifier la fiabilité des produits et ainsi, de gagner la confiance de ces consommateurs.
Le secteur du bioplastique est également tiré par la recherche et développement et les différentes innovations pour des applications toujours plus diverses, par exemple le thermoplastique hydrosoluble.
