Lescouches sont des produits de papier toilette qui se portent directement sur le corps avec une couche absorbante, généralement constituée de pâte de bois déchiquetée, également appelée pâte "fluff". La composition des couches comprend également d'autres matériaux (plastique, élastique pour faciliter l'utilisation, lotion de soin, indicateur d'urine, parfum, etc.)

Deux grands types de consommateurs peuvent utiliser des couches : les bébés et les enfants, et certaines personnes âgées souffrant d'incontinence. Cette étude ne porte que sur les couches pour bébés. ils accompagnent l'enfant au moins jusqu'à l'apprentissage de la propreté, c'est-à-dire vers l'âge de trois ans.

Le marché mondial connaît une croissance régulière depuis 2010, portée par la croissance de la population mondiale. En Espagne, le marché des couches pour bébés est fortement dominé par le leader Dodot (groupe Procter & Gamble, l'équivalent de Pampers) qui occupe une position hégémonique sur le marché. D'autres acteurs importants sont Ontex, qui fabrique des produits sous marque de distributeur dans son usine de Valverde del Majano, pour des groupes tels que Carrefour, Lidl, Alcampo et Día.

Enfin, de plus en plus d'acteurs se positionnent sur les segments du naturel ou du zéro déchet, en réponse à la préoccupation croissante des consommateurs pour l'environnement et la composition des produits. Par exemple, Pingo propose des couches écologiques, et Ecopipo vend des couches réutilisables.
