Les gestionnaires d'actifs peuvent être divisés en trois grands segments : les gestionnaires de patrimoine, les banques et les compagnies d'assurance.
La part de marché du Royaume-Uni reste prédominante en Europe malgré l'incertitude causée par Brexit ; en 2017, le pays détenait 37 % des actifs sous gestion en Europe, suivi par la France (17 %) et l'Allemagne (9 %). La position de leader sur le marché est liée au rôle de Londres en tant que centre financier ainsi qu'à la taille de l'économie britannique.
La fragmentation du marché britannique est importante, mais la répartition des richesses sous gestion reste très concentrée. Par exemple, Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM) Insight Investment et BlackRock détiennaient 72 % de la valeur des fonds de pension en 2018.
